Fans of classic tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPG) are in for a treat - from QuasiReal Publishing comes an exciting story telling game: MythCraft.
MythCraft is a game where friends and players create characters to take on adventures in a fantastical world, where their actions create the story. This is a classic d20 game system that uses a standard set of gaming dice, with campaigns running over multiple sessions as players level up from level 1 to level 30. The MythCrafter (MC) is the story teller, narrator, rule keeper, and the ever-important role of playing nonplayer characters (NPC) and, together, the players and MC weave stories that take place in the world of Ancerra.
While at PAX East this past weekend, I got to talk a little bit about MythCraft with Roger, who's part of the team behind the TTRPG. You can check out our brief chat and more about the game itself below.
What is MythCraft?
The creators of MythCraft played classic tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, and Pathfinder. They loved those games, as many of us who start out our TTRPG journeys with either one or the other system, but wanted something between the two systems - a game where players had the freedom to truly create unique characters. A system where players didn't have to wait for minutes on end just to be able to take their turn again in combat.
MythCraft's combat system is fun and keeps players engaged. Even when it's not their turn. In combat, players have action points. Everything from moving, to swinging a sword, or even casting a spell costs action points. Action points that aren't used during their turn can be used as reaction points during another player's turn. These points, if not used during the other players' turns, can rollover back to its respective player's turn, increasing their total amount of action points for that turn.
Besides a fun combat system, MythCraft offers 18 playable lineages, 14 classes, and a combination of backgrounds and professions for players to create an original character. Here is something that I personally like about this game: players don't get to choose a class until they have reached level 2. Players can go several levels before choosing a class, or even multi-class if they so choose.

Started with a Kickstarter in 2023, MythCraft is still young, but has an amazing team behind it. Physical books and other resources can be bought directly on the official website or digital copies can be found on DrivethruRPG. A demo of MythCraft is available for free on their website, all you have to do is signup with your email. In the demo, you will get the game mechanics, a basic set of rules, 4 pre-created characters, and some creatures to take down.
