This underrated 2023 movie needs a sequel

Dracula stares down at Clemens in The Last Voyage of the Demeter

So, I’ve been on a Nosferatu-induced kick this past week, which means I’ve been rewatching and reading up on Dracula and my favorite Dracula and “Dracula inspired” movies and shows like my life depends on it. That is, when I’m not obsessively rebuilding my Animal Crossing: New Horizons island after failing to back mine up properly and losing 3 years’ worth of progress.

Castlevania, Castlevania: Nocturne, Dracula Untold (which is cringey in parts but the story is actually pretty good), and last year’s “flop”, The Last Voyage of the Demeter have been rewatched and rediscussed at home, and my fiancée and I watched Nosferatu this weekend - the perfect icing on the cake.

But, during our rewatch of The Last Voyage of the Demeter, I felt the same way I felt the first time I saw this movie in theaters: IT NEEDS A SEQUEL.

Dracula looks a lot more human at the end of The Last Voyage of the Demeter

And the face above is the reason why.

Sure, I agree that Demeter isn’t perfect. I’ve previously complained about the CGI on Dracula being entirely too much before in a previous review, but that was really it. But upon rewatching the ending where, in the most chilling of ways, Dracula announces his presence (and kinda hints that this won’t be the last Clemens sees of him) as Clemens declares he won’t stop until he’s hunted down this beast.

I know some folks had issues with Demeter and I don’t quite grasp why. Sure, the characters made some absolutely awful decisions when it came to hiding spots or running away up the mast instead of down and towards people, but the movie itself was highly entertaining. But I am honestly shocked that in today’s world, where reboots and remakes and adaptations and new series are all the rage, there hasn’t been a proper rebooting or series made for Dracula yet.

Huh.

So, like… where’s the hunt, Clemens?
