Gundam Breaker 4's DLC, so far, has been a disappointment

I'm a massive fan of Bandai/Namco's Gundam Breaker series of games. As an avid Gunpla fan with over 80 real life builds to my name, my fandom is bordering on obsession. And before Gundam Breaker 4 launched I was playing Gundam Breaker 3, at minimum, weekly, despite it being a 2016 launch.

In addition to a massive base game, the DLC offerings were really fun with diverse stories. Whether it was teaming up with a trio of older adults reliving their early Gundam fandom, to actually taking out a terrorist plot that attempted to drop a massive space elevator on the people below similar to what Gundam fans know as a colony drop. You even help an AI program achieve their true sense of self by plugging their coding into the Breaker software and battling within it.

Gundam Breaker 4, however, is not like this when it comes to DLC. While the base game still had a really fun yet grounded story that focused heavily on a surprisingly relatable villain that was fighting against the usage of AI to develop aspects of gaming, the DLC story is just empty.

SPOILERS FOR GUNDAM BREAKER 4's BASE GAME AND DLC

See, at the end of Gundam Breaker 4, the adorable sentient AI named Lilan entered a bit of a "deep sleep" effectively removing her from the hub world and the story and the DLC seems to be all about bringing her back...as slowly as humanly possible.

It takes a DLC to find out that, yes, Lilan is in a deep sleep state just like you already knew and you don't know how to wake her up. It takes several missions to figure it out.

The second DLC chapter is you trying to figure out how to wake her only to find out you just can't but then you come up with an idea that maybe hosting a tournament will wake her up because of...positivity?

The third DLC is you playing in said tournament with absolutely no one checking in on Lilan. For real. The tournament happens and at no point is anyone like "aye yo, did it work"?

Despite the fact that the story manages to shoehorn every fan favorite characters from previous Gundam Breaker games (including the unfortunately shut down Gundam Breaker Mobile) it just equates to more hands on deck for the absolutely nothing that is being accomplished.

In Gundam Breaker 4's DLC, fans are reintroduced to Mochizuki, a fan favorite from the previous game, Gundam Breaker 3

For a lot of players though, the DLC isn't about the story, it's about the unlocks and the DLC definitely has...some. Here's the part of the article where it someone who knows nothing about Gundam has been trying to read this they're going to absolutely clock out now as I list what's available so far. As of the time of this writing there have been three DLC sets which have the following suits:

DLC 1 - GO! RESTART!!

  • Crossbone Gundam X1 Full Cloth

  • Penelope

  • Sengoku Astray Gundam

  • 00 Qan[T] Full Saber

DLC 2 - BRAVE DIVE

  • Hi-Nu Gundam (Ver.Ka)

  • Hi-Nu Gundam HWS (Ver.Ka)

  • Hi-Nu Gundam HWS 2nd Form (Ver.Ka)

  • Hamma-Hamma

  • Uraven Gundam (Final Battle Spec.)

  • Geymalk

  • Vigna-Ghina

DLC 3 - BATTLE TOURNAMENT

  • Hyper Gyanko

  • ZZ Gundam (Ver.Ka)

  • Enhanced ZZ Gundam (Ver.Ka)

  • Mobile Doll Sarah

  • Mobile Doll Sarah (Real)

  • Knight Strike Gundam

  • Gundam Vidar

Now, if you're not familiar here's the thing, there are HUNDREDS of different Gundams and while this list looks like a lot, it's a bit of a disappointing show. For example, if, without looking it up on line, you can tell me the different between the three Hi-Nu Gundams in DLC 2 you have got to be the master at "spot the difference" games. And Sengoku Astray Gundam in DLC 1? This will make it the 10th Astray in the game and I already can't tell those Bionicle looking freaks apart.

And it's not as if there aren't a MILLION other, more interesting looking Gundam they can pick from. In fact I'll be doing a wish list but as an example, look at my personal favorite, the Gundam Farsia. There ain't NOTHING like it.

Yep. She got flower cannons and rides around on a floral themed platform. There is nothing like it and it would be so fun to have.

Hopefully, over the next year or so Gundam Breaker 4 will get more DLC than this and it'll do more interesting things but as each DLC pack gets it's own tab and Gundam Breaker 3 only had about 6 tabs of DLC it's not looking great, but here's hoping.
