5 predictions about the next DCU movie or show based mostly off James Gunn's methods

Superman and Krypto sitting on the moon looking at Earth

Alright, so there is going to be a LOT of speculation here so if you don't like when I toss my tin foil hat on, honestly, you're missing my best stuff. But here we go.

See, I've watching Superman a couple times now. I watch Peacemaker. I watch pretty much everything James Gunn touches when it comes to comic book translations because, in my eyes, he gets what makes comic books good and somehow translates it into movies perfectly. The silliness. The pacing. The way that waiting a month for 14 pages of story creates a genre where you HAVE to respect the viewer's time. He gets it. In my opinion at least.

And it's at the point where I think I know him well enough where I see where his brain is going. So here's a couple theories I got doing.

05) WE'RE GONNA GET IMPS

Mxyzpylk and Bat-Mite right over a pile of dead Supermen and Batmen

In one of the first episodes of James Gunn's Peacemaker, John Economos mentions that the team had to deal with Bat-Mite once. Which, already, is a HUGE thing to confirm if you think about the fact that they made the 4th Dimensional imp/Bat-Stan canon in such a casual way.

And in a scene in the recent Superman movie, Superman and Lois share a very sweet and emotional scene whilst, in the background, the Justice Gang beats the tar out of an energy being that, apparently, exists solely because of a "4th Dimensional Imp". And as we all know, 4th Dimension Imp plus Metropolis usually equals Mxyzpylk, one of my favorite characters of all time.

In fact, I'll go a step further and say that one of the best examples of what shaped Superman for me was Adventures of Superman #646. In it, Mxyzpylk came to Superman to warn him about someone trying to kill him just in time for the "Day of Vengence" events to wipe all magic from the universe inadvertently stripping Mxy of all powers and leaving him homeless with memory problems. Superman finds him and tries to help him and it's just...sweetness.

And James Gunn is the type of guy to have read all these books. He's a massive comic nerd, especially for books around this time period. And I feel, with how well he was able to cover the weirdness of Guardians of the Galaxy, he'd be the perfect pick to get this done. And James, if, for some weird reason you're reading this. Ted Danson as Mxy. Just...thinking about it.

04) Prequel Material (or seperate movie)

One of the most detailed Easter Eggs in the Superman movie was, oddly, one of the most heavily cut ones. If you kept an eye out during the scene inside the Hall of Justice, you'd see that the main hall was surrounded by a remarkably detailed mural that showed the history of superheroes.

But most of the scenes showcasing it seem to have been cut but, luckily, images were uploaded that let us see all of it.

A mural showing in the Hall of Justice during the Superman movie.

The mural showcases many of DC's past heroes but also makes some absolutely wild choices. Some of my favorites like Liberty Belle, Wild Cat, and Freedom Beast (I'm not kidding) are there. But there are also some absolutely choices like Vibe, Sister Symmetry, Hugo Danner, and...wait...next to Sandman...is that the fucking Ghost of Flanders?!

A panel showing the Ghost of Flanders, a DC character I promise does exist.
Aww, he got a wittle bum-bum.

These could be just some really neat references, but also, this is James Gunn, the guy who gave us Suicide Squad. This mural gives us a LOT of characters that are now confirmed to exist or have existed in this universe and, given some of the choices, are characters that can have just...absolutely terrible things happen to them without upsetting the viewers or DC. It also leaders directly to Max Lord, almost making him look like he's the person who may have purchased the mural in the first place as the Justice Gang is shown to be owned BY Lord himself.

Though, James, since you're still reading, do NOT hurt Max Mercury okay? He's my special boy. Hashtag (3x2(9yz)4a).

03) METAMORPHO IS GO

Metamorpho giving you that look someone gives you when they're about to show you something on their phone.

While it may seem like a Superman movie that has the members of the Justice Gang in it, we got a LOT of Metamorpho lore in it. In fact, "Squggle Man" here gets his lore references almost as much as Superman's.

When the news breaks about the message from Superman's parents, Supes isolates himself in a large building to get away from the crowds. He goes into a large building where, for some odd reason, they just let him in and don't let the crowd in. That building? Stagg Industries. The business owned by Simon Stagg, the incredibly terrible garbage human who's attempts from keeping Rex Mason from dating his daughter inadvertently turned him into the superhero Metamorpho.

And we are absolutely introduced to Metamorpho in a huge way as he's who helps Superman escape the pocket dimension. It's around this same time that we're introduced to Rex's son Joey.

And later, towards the climax, we're even introduced Sapphire Stagg sitting on a couch with Rex and Joey watching the news. We get the entire family and point of origin which would be wild for a character that James isn't going to do anything else with.

02) A New and Different Suicide Squad

James Gunn has VERY heavy ties to the Suicide Squad as his work with them is, essentially, what got his foot in the DC door. And we know that the Superman movie takes place in a new DC universe that has some differences from the one that Suicide Squad took place in.

So when we cut to the Department of Defense scene in Superman and Lutghor had his plans cut short for Florence Crawley I gasped.

If you don't remember her from Suicide Squad, Florence Crawley was NOT a major member of the Department of Defense, but rather one of Amanda Waller's people. In fact, a very important one in the fact that she was the one on Waller's team who knocked her the fuck out.

A scene from the Suicide Squad movie where Amanda Waller is laid out by Flo

So seeing her as a high ranking member of this government team showcases that this universe's Amanda Waller (who we know still exists because there's a Waller series in the works) might have some difficulty getting her plans out there. And, honestly, with Luthor being sent to Belle Reeves she'll have her hands full.

01) Earth-3 Luthor

I didn't think a lot about this until my wife brought up how upsetting the LuthorCorp name being used over LexCorp was. Which surprised me as I may or may not run a long running Facebook page with the LexCorp name.

But now I've completely become obsessed with breaking this down because I can't stop thinking about it. Especially as the movie showcases a bunch of things that casually imply the existence of multiple dimensions.

The "Pocket Dimension" that Luthor builds his prison in takes place in the bleed between dimensions which, while also tying in really well with the Engineer's backstory but that's for a different article. But it also could imply where the idea of the name "Ultraman" came from when naming what turned out to be Bizarro.

Here's my theory. I don't think the Luthor from the Superman film is from this dimension. I think that there's potentional for Alexander Luthor Jr. from Earth-3.

A panel from a DC comic where Alexander Luthor Jr introduces himself.
The nasty green and yellow Luthorcorp logo
Eww

See, we can talk about the fact that James Gunn said that he liked the LuthorCorp logo from Smallville to which I say, depending on your age, bullshit/poppycock. One of the things I love about James Gunn is his ability to turn comic books into full on reality. He didn't force Batman on us as support in a Superman movie. He gave us Mister Terrific, comic accurate and stunning. He gave us Peacemaker. He gave us Polka Dot Man. He gives us deep comic accurate things and for him to give us Luthorcorp with a nasty ass Yellow and Green logo instead of the iconic Lexcorp with a purple base just because he liked Smallville? No. I won't buy it.

See, over in Earth-3 Alexander Luthor Senior (who was a good guy) did not like getting called Lex, which is why it never factored into the business name. And instead of focusing on purple, he had a penchant for green. And his son, Alexander Jr. (who would eventually become a villain) like many villains in real life and fiction, had an affinity for gold plating.

So with this in mind, it would almost make sense for Luthorcorp to be here. Possibly having the real Lex trapped in the pocket dimension. This would also give us the reason why he decided to name his Superman clone Ultraman as Ultraman would have been his first "thorn in his side" and getting the chance to name a half brain dead clone of Superman "Ultraman" would have been a point of joy for him.

Also, having Lex being able to come forward and claim the clone was responsible for not just every crime that happened recently but also everything that happened in his past isn't just something that the Lex we know and love would do, but it's actually what he DID do. In the comics, when Alexander Luthor Junior was revealed and eventually stopped from his evil nonsense, Lex found him and had the Joker BRUTALLY murder him, like . Then, he presented the body of Alexander Luthor and stated, after Mister Terrific and others ID'd the identically DNA, that this was a different version of himself that had him locked up. He used this, in court, to absolve himself of practically every crime he had ever committed.

Now, is anything listed here confirmed in any way shape or form? Nah. But come on, this is James Gunn. And James, since you're still reading, if none of these ideas are things you're thinking of but you are now, PLEASE let me cameo.
