Why are people so mad about Agatha All Along being so good?

I am absolutely positive that I was not the only soul singing “Down the Witches’ Road” like it was a prayer and watching every single episode of Marvel Studio’s latest (and bestest) gem, Agatha All Along. I know I wasn’t, because I’ve seen so much praise for this show, and rightfully so. It’s truly what the MCU needed - a refreshing, exciting, entertaining, and perfectly inclusive one-season series that explores some of our favorite Marvel anti-heroes.

But, please, someone pray tell me - why is everyone else so angry that this show did so well?

I hear one very cringe-worthy word in my head every time I see laugh reacts or angry words directed at all the praise Agatha has gotten: “woke”.

My friend, sit down. Let us have a chat.

People do realize that the vast majority of “woke” Marvel characters we’re just now getting introduced to have been around for literal decades?! Marvel Comics has had some of the best LGBTQ+ characters and arcs since the MCU was even a thought. The only reason we’re just now seeing it on the big or tinier screen is because our society has kind of warmed up to facing the fact we’re all different in our own right. I say “kind of” because *gestures to the entire past week in the US*. You know?

Yes, Agatha All Along’s main cast is a bunch of mostly queer women and a queer teenager. You see same-sex kisses, hear about same-sex relationships (which warmed my heart seeing Billy’s “parents” being supportive of), and a lot of fun little queer side remarks and quips. Is that why? Is it because the MCU is showing the part of Marvel that isn’t all testosterone, muscly men fighting, and superheroes-y?

My friends, if that’s the case, you might as well stop giving the MCU your attention. There’s so much more than just explosions and hot men like Thor striding about, saving the world. There are real struggles and pain being reflected off these Marvel series (uh, hello X-Men ‘97? Can we say Magneto is unfortunately right?), there is realism to the fantasy aspect of it.

So, tell me once again, why are people angry that Agatha All Along is so damn good?

Because I truly don’t get it.

I'm currently working on a piece about how I recently rewatched some of the early MCU stuff to see how they aged. That Thor movie that incels insisted we go back to after they had the last two Thor movies? It was just him half naked through most of his scenes doing beefcake shit. They need to really look within themselves and find the REAL reason people being open about their sexuality are upsetting to them.
