Last year, I got to close out my reading year with one of the most refreshing and intriguing tales I had read in a long time: Of Withering Dreams. This year, OWD gets its sequel - which I just got done reading the ARC for last night.

Of Blooming Embers, the second installment in Rowyn Adelaide's Fate of the Embered series, is set for a release of July 17th and I must say this: if you're a romantasy reader and you have not stumbled upon this series yet, you must go find it now. the Fate of the Embered series revolves around Seryn, her childhood friends Gavrel and Kaden, their world of Midst Fall, and the mandatory seasonal slumber its residents must partake in order to conserve resources. There's something not quite right underneath it all, and it's all up to Seryn and company to figure out how to deal with one of the cruelest villains I've read on paper and her bs.

Of Blooming Embers spoiler-free review

The first book, Of Withering Dreams, blew both me and our Ashley away with its refreshing premise, magic system, descriptions, drama, and a damned cliffhanger. Rowyn Adelaide has a knack for descriptions and she outdoes herself in Of Blooming Embers as she brings places to life in such a unique way - regardless if it's a busy scene or not. Her descriptions of both items and places in this series are the kind of descriptions you read and promptly close your eyes to savor the perfect mental picture Rowyn paints for us. And, as she does with her descriptions, her plot connects beautifully and isn't messy.

Though this book is a lot more romance heavy (duh, this is romantasy after all) and a lot of romance normally turns me off from the plot (ironic, as a romantasy reader), there was still solid balance between the romance and the rest of the plot points. The plot is now getting to the point where the romance becomes a piece to figuring things out and saving Midst Fall, so it definitely takes on the shape of "more than just romance to fill the pages and the dreams of my readers", and I really enjoyed that. The FMC, Seryn, continues to be a badass and, with the addition of Gavrel's POV in the second book, we now see things from his side and get a lot more of a sense of who he is, and why he's there.

And holy mother of spice, Batman. This book has plenty of delicious open-door scenes from both POVs. What a treat. Thank you, Rowyn.

I refuse to spoil, so, all I'll say is if you're interested in reading this incredible series, PLEASE DO. It comes with my personal (and Ashley's) stamp of approval.
