Gretchen Powell Fox has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Her characters? Relatable. Her worldbuilding? Fascinating. Her trope subversion? Brilliant. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing an author she is. Smoke & Scar and Splintered Kingdom (both of which I was lucky enough to read early) both had me in a chokehold it was near impossible to put the books down.

So when I saw her news today, I knew I needed to celebrate in the best way I know how: writing about it!

First of all, this is the perfect book to launch a new imprint. It's got a built-in fan base who are addicted to buying new editions! It's been an Amazon bestseller and consistently receives the pretty orange banners on the site that most indie authors covet. But the books are also AMAZING! Both books have made my top 10 books I have read for this year, and I'm already anticipating that Shadow and Son will be at the top of my list next year.

But also, it couldn't have happened to a better person. Gretchen is a light in this dark world. She's funny (her multitasking and marketing videos are always a delight on her socials), she's humble, and, overall, she's created an amazing community on Discord that is always a delight to take part in. This is an amazing thing to happen for one of my favorite authors, and I truly believe with my entire heart that she deserves this.

Now, with things changing, here is the breakdown of what you need to know as Gretchen makes the jump to being trad-published:

  • Splintered Kingdom's indie edition will release on November 11th

  • Smoke and Scar and Splintered Kingdom's physical editions will be taken down on November 15th

  • Smoke and Scar and Splintered Kingdom's ebooks and audiobooks will stay put and will also stay on Kindle Unlimited

  • Smoke and Scar will rerelease on April 7th, 2026, in paperback and hardcover

  • Splintered Kingdom will rerelease on August 11th, 2026, in paperback and hardcover

  • Shadow and Son will release in Fall 2026

  • Any events she's planning on going to are business as usual

Overall, I am so hyped to get this news today. I'm excited for these books to be available in all of my favorite bookstores, and for more readers to fall in love with Elyria, Cedric, and Co. And I cannot wait to see Gretchen in person on October 11th and tell her all of this in person.

Splintered Kingdom releases for a very limited time on November 11th, and I recommend preordering now!
